A few weeks ago, I decided I needed to get in better shape. I considered buying one of those weighted vests for rucking, something to make my walks more intense.
But then I had a better idea: I strapped my 36-pound, three-year-old son into a backpack carrier… and started hiking with him instead.
Now I get exercise and quality time with my son.
One activity. Two goals.
Double the purpose. Double the return.
And that got me thinking, this principle applies to your career and job search, too.
Rethink Your Time: Are You Dual-Purposing?
Too often, we separate our lives into boxes:
🧠 “This is networking.”
👥 “This is catching up.”
🙏 “This is volunteering.”
But what if you didn’t have to choose? What if you could dual-purpose those moments, and create career momentum in the process?
Let’s look at a few easy ways to turn everyday actions into career-building steps:
🔁 1. Reconnect with Purpose
Text an old colleague to catch up, but ask what they’re seeing in your field. Conversations can be personal and professional at the same time.
🏘 2. Attend Local Events (with Intention)
Go to that community event or meetup, but set a goal to connect with at least one person and mention what you’re exploring professionally.
💼 3. Volunteer Strategically
Looking to give back? Choose panels, boards, or groups that align with the industry or function you’re targeting in your job search.
💬 4. Scroll with Strategy
LinkedIn is full of passive scrollers. Be different. Leave a thoughtful comment, share a post, or DM someone you’ve been meaning to connect with.
🚶♂️ One Action, Two Benefits
In your job search (and your life), intentionality turns everyday steps into progress. The best actions often aren’t big leaps, they’re small steps with multiple outcomes.
So whether it’s going for a walk, catching up with a friend, or browsing social media, ask yourself:
How can I double the purpose of this moment?
Because every step counts. And sometimes, the smallest ones carry the most weight.
Keep going. You’re doing more than you think. 👊
