Right now, most job postings receive anywhere from 300 to 1,000 applications.
Let’s be generous and say 300.
That means your chances of landing an interview are around 0.33%.
To put that in perspective?
You might have better odds of beating Steph Curry in a game of HORSE. 🏀
Yet most job seekers spend 90% or more of their time hitting “Apply” and hoping for the best.
There’s a better way, and it’s called the 70/30 Rule.
What is the 70/30 Rule?
Spend 70% of your time networking and just 30% applying online.
That’s it.
No tricks. No gimmicks. Just a smarter strategy based on what actually works.
Why Networking Works
Because behind every job posting is… a person.
And networking is just starting a conversation with that person, or someone who knows them. That’s it.
Here’s who you can start with today:
Start Close to Home:
- Friends and former coworkers
- Neighbors, your church community, gym buddies, or fellow parents
- Friends of friends
- People in your everyday circles
Then Branch Out Online:
- Alumni from your college (yes, even if you’ve never met)
- Former colleagues from past jobs
- People who grew up where you did or now live where you are
- Shared affiliations (certifications, professional groups, industries)
What Do You Say?
Keep it simple. Ask for a conversation, not a job.
Here’s a sample message:
Hi Susan,
I saw that you’re a fellow Hokie, I was at Tech around the same time you were. I see that you’re currently at Capital One working with them on Machine Learning.
I’ve heard great things about the company and would love to chat with you for a few minutes to learn more about your experience and any advice you might have for me in my career.
Thanks so much for your time and connecting here.
Most people are happy to help, as long as you’re respectful of their time and clear that this is not a pitch.
When You Get the Meeting
Treat it like a learning opportunity, not a sales call.
Ask questions like:
- What do you enjoy most about your work?
- What helped you successfully transition into your role or company?
- Is there anyone else you recommend I speak with?
Then, if the conversation goes well, follow up with something like:
It was great chatting with you the other day, thank you again for your time.
I saw this job posting at XYZ Company and thought I might be a good fit. Would you be open to sharing your thoughts?
Even if nothing comes of it right away, you’re no longer just a name in a sea of resumes. You’re now a real person with a real connection.
Real Opportunities Come from Real People. Online applications aren’t useless, but they’re not your only option.
Instead of pouring all your time into blind clicks, focus on building meaningful connections.
Try this this week:
✅ Apply to a few jobs
✅ Reach out to 3x as many people
Because your job search shouldn’t come down to beating Steph Curry at a game of HORSE. You got this. 👊
